Guns aren’t bad, but they make it easier for bad people to bad things and we have no need for a semi-auto AR15 for self defense!

Sorry, I’ve been arguing with a very very right leaning (actually, if the “right wing” has a cliff, I’m sure he’s fallen off) person all day and its frustrating me. Not worth arguing with those people.

Also, these videos are very worth watching because John Oliver is a bloody genius.

Someone once argued that he uses an AR15 for hunting.

What the hell was he hunting? Pretty sure that if it’s anything short of a T-rex that he’s just cheating.

There is an Australian comedian who while on tour in America did a bit on gun control. I nearly pi55ed myself laughing.

Hey I’ll be honest, guns are cool! But, if I may ask, what are you going to use it for?

It may be overkill for self defense unless the other guy also has an AR15. Honestly, a shotgun works better at home defense, maybe even a semi auto lol.

Regardless, I enjoy building them and firing them for fun. So theres that.

People use them for more than just home defense lol. They make great hunting and target weapons.

Is it strange how people who never stop crying about their gun freedom, don’t usually seem to give a shit about anybody else’s rights?

Didn’t we fight a war over Brits telling us we shouldn’t have guns?

True, they are enjoyable to use, but I don’t see a reasonable need for them in today’s society. Are the deaths worth being able to shoot for fun every once and a while?

Damn squirrels always get into my moms birdfeeder tho so she would probably want me to hit a few of them. They can be pretty good if you cook them right as well

No, that seems suitable/appropriate.

Personally if you (a generic you and not specifically yourself) have a weapon you can see a soldier storming a house or country, then that’s excessive for hunting.

I love it when he says there is only one excuse for having a gun and that is “fuckoff, I like guns”.

Cant control everyones actions. I do agree that guns are way too easy to get. But I dont think getting rid of them altogether is the answer either.

We also dont need 600+ hp cars, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, food and drinks with excessive amounts of fat or sugar.

All those kill more people than guns.

Im not much for politics either, both sides make great points and terrible ones. Im kinda neutral there when it comes to that.

Long guns are very rarely used in crimes. In spite of some high profile cases, they're used in some exceptionally small number of crimes. Various handguns (mostly stolen) are the weapons of choice...

An AR15 would be a very bad choice against a T-Rex. In fact, they’re banned from use in hunting in many places (at least in 5.56mm/.223) because they’re ineffective at killing animals.

*chuckles* People that don’t know guns are so gullible. Just because a gun has a wood stock doesn’t have any bearing on the functionality.

I’ve shot one of these. Really interesting mechanism...

Wild Hogs. They are an invasive species and are very difficult to kill, and they come in packs. They are a nuisance, and wildlife departments encourage killing them.

Can you tell me where it talks about self defense in the 2nd amendment?

AR-15 is more accurate, easier to aim, has more controllable recoil and better ergonomics than just about any other home defense gun. Frangible .223 ammo also penetrates less than 9mm parabellum or buckshot through drywall. It is, in fact, an ideal choice for home defense. I’d certainly much rather have an AR-15 with a 30 round mag than a 6 shot revolver if confronted with, say, half a dozen armed robbers breaking into my home. Even with a single armed home invader, I’d rather have the AR-15 over almost anything else.

Leaving politics out of it, ARs do serve as a legitimate defense weapon.

see, that’s where you expose your ignorance. That rifle I pictured is a Ruger Mini-14. It is a semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine, and it fires 5.56x45mm NATO.

The AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine, which fires 5.56x45mm NATO.

So why is the rifle I showed “suitable for hunting” in your mind, while the AR-15 is somehow “overkill?”

I don’t know rifles or certainly what you get over there. You want to call it ignorance fine go for it knock your socks off.

As a cadet I learned to shoot on the 22 (what I’d call a ‘hunting’ rifle).

Kinja'd!!!

and later onto the L98 and then L85A2/SA80 (what I’d call a ‘not hunting’ rifle).

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

One is a single round shot for hunting the other is military and carries a different feeling.

But hey. What do I know. I’m ignorant walking about in the almost certain knowledge that the person walking nearby if they get pissed is only going to shout and get drunk, maybe punch someone. Not go home fester and then take it out on a school of shopping centre.

Take care and have a great day.

This idea that an AR-15 is some kind of doombringer or ultra-powerful death beam is highly illusory. Anyone hunting (or prepared for defense against) anything as large as a bear will want a heavier caliber.

“Assault Weapons” (put in quotation marks, because the term is meaningless) do allow rare and random mass shootings to occur. However, they are not the 400-lb gorilla in the room. The vast majority of gun crime occurs with cheap and plentiful pistols, most of them costing a few hundred dollars, and are easily concealable.

And I’m not particulary fond of people hoping to regulate American’s purchasing decisions based on what they “need”. I want an AR-15, it’s a wonderfully fun weapon to shoot, and I use extensively for hunting. If I don’t commit any crimes with it, why should I have it removed from my possesion?

I don’t subscribe to the “shotguns are better” mindset. Shotguns marketed for “home defense” are typically short-barreled (18-20".) They have brutal recoil*, and typical buck and slug loads will have a huge muzzle flash and blast. One shot and both you and the intruder will be temporarily deaf and blinded (if it’s dark.) Plus, buckshot will just punch right through the walls of a typical house, and at indoor distances the spread of pellets will only be about 4".

*believe me, when I sighted in my 870 slug gun for deer season, after 10 rounds of even 2-3/4" slugs my shoulder and neck were screaming for ibuprofen the next day.

It’s unfortunate that the dichotomy in today’s society is so severe. I’m so far in the middle that it feels like I can’t talk to anyone about anything. Finding pro-gun, pro-gay marriage, pro-legalization, pro-finance reform people is very difficult. Either you’re a gun loving bible thumper or a gun hating bleeding heart.

There is always a middle ground.

I used to have this 70's comic strip about a guy who is picked on by his sober friends for drinking, and then made fun of by his druggie friends for only drinking. It ended with a punchline about how those in the middle have the hardest time. It must be an actual work of art because that theme transcends the subject matter of the strip itself.
